About Michigan Career Technical Institute

Written By Jim Wellever, Cabinetmaking/Millwork Training Department

Michigan Career & Technical Institute (M.C.T.I.) provides vocational training for people with physical, mental and emotional disabilities.  It has been in continuous operation since 1944 when it began as the Michigan Veterans Vocational School. The Cabinetmaking/Millwork Training Program has been partnered with Planit Solutions since 2001. In 2002, it became the first post-secondary, WoodLINKS U.S.A. site.

In this nationally recognized program, (WMIA Educator of the  Year, 2007,  WoodLINKS U.S.A. Industry Partnership of the Year, 2005),  all students are exposed to Cabinet Vision®, using optimization diagrams, cultists and assembly sheets.

In the third term, all students take the Basic Alphacam® course along with CNC router operation training.  Students with the aptitude and interest in specializing in CNC woodworking operations spend an entire ten week term doing advanced projects, programming with Alphacam®, designing and constructing fixtures and learning advanced Alphacam® applications.  The program averages 22 graduates per year.  The current economy is stifling job placement which had been consistently over 90%.
M.C.T.I. works closely with many WoodLINKS high school programs, providing technical support, instructor training, and articulation to post-secondary.

Testimonials

Having access to the Alphacam software will enable our entire student body to gain experience from the design stage to full woodworking computer numerical control machining. Our students will have an advantage over competing schools as they move on to advanced education and training.
